Right when Manteca High’s sophomore football team picked up some needed momentum the sound of thunder and sight of lightning screeched it to a halt.
The Buffaloes closed in 41-28 with 11 seconds left in the third quarter Friday when they hosted Edison for a non-league contest. They had trouble getting their arms around Edison’s shifty quarterback, who broke several big plays throughout.
Before the stoppage, both teams were lining up in kickoff formation as the officials consulted with Manteca athletic director Dave Smith. The contest was delayed, and fans from the home and visiting bleachers were instructed to file out of the stadium and settle into safe areas.
Soon after, officials decided to end the sophomore game, and 30 minutes later it was decided that the varsity contest would go on.
The rest of the game will not be made up.
Ripon 52, Ripon Christian 6
At Stouffer Field, Michael Ysit rambled for nearly 200 rushing yards while cashing in three touchdowns for the Indians (3-0).
Josh Clark finished around the century mark while contributing a rushing touchdown. Davis Armstrong pitched in with a score of his own. Quarterback Bradley Clark added a 5-yard touchdown strike to Jay Smith.
“We started off slow tonight but our offense came back and started executing well,” Ripon sophomore head coach Jorge Velasco said. “We had a lot of fun tonight, but there were still some mistakes, penalties, that we need to work on. I feel good about going into next week.
“We’re healthy, which is good because depth is always an issue when you only have 21 guys.”
Sierra 41, Laguna Creek 20
In Elk Grove, Sierra (2-1) had six different players find the end zone.
Jonathon Montoya, Bryson Sanders and Josh Webb each scored a rushing touchdown, while Dakota Conners, Reid Maestas and Jonathon Monkholm did their damage through the air.
Highlighting the play on defense were Aaron Theil, Hunter Peterson and Austin Brice.
Freshman
Sierra 48, Argonaut 0
It didn’t take long for Sierra (3-0) to establish its dominance over the visiting Mustangs of Jackson.
Quarterback Jarrod Silveira threw for two touchdowns and ran in one more to help the Timberwolves stake a 22-0 first-quarter lead. Silveira showed no signs of slowing down after his two outstanding performances to start the season. He completed 14 of 20 passes for 144 yards and three TDs, and ran five times for 52 yards and two TDs.
L.J. Alofaituli was productive on both sides of scrimmage, rushing for 80 yards and a TD while coming up with five tackles and a fumble recovery. Hunter Johnson (1-yard reception), Alex Barnett (7-yard reception), Ryan Vasquez (10-yard reception) and Trevon Mcray (2-yard run) each added a touchdown.
Devin Nunez was an all-around performer — five carries, 52 yards; four receptions, 32 yards; four tackles, forced fumble, interception on defense. John Cibelli-Sanford tallied eight tackles to lead the defense.
