Chavez cant tame explosive Twolves

STOCKTON – The Sierra High Timberwolves continued its early season dominance Friday, rolling past Chavez, 63-24.

Mark Paule Jr. led the way once again, scoring six touchdowns while gaining 249 yards on 27 carries.

He did all that against a very good team, according Sierra coach Jeff Harbison.

“I think Chavez is one of the favorites to win the San Joaquin Athletic Association,” he said.

The Titans (1-1) certainly had speed and quickness, as the Timberwolves (3-0) can attest.

“We were concerned that they had the players who can score at any time,” said Sierra linebacker Trevon McCray.

He did his part to keep Chavez in check with an interception, forced fumble and a sack.

McCray wasn’t alone. The entire defense got into the act.

Shortly after Paule scored the first of his TDs – Chris Stevens setup the score with a 40-yard catch-and-run pass from quarterback Devin Nunez – Marcos Castillo halted a Titans’ drive with an interception.

Moments later, Paule, from the “Jumbo” formation, took the snap from center for a 2-yard score.

Sierra quickly took advantage of another Chavez turnover. Nunez, who connected on 9 of his 11 passes for 168 yards, hit Daniel Wyatt on 22-yard strike three plays after the fumble.

After McCray’s interception, Paule scored on a 5-yard run to help make it 28-0.

Chavez finally unleashed its big-play arsenal as Priest Jennings raced 47 yards for the score.

The Titans delivered on another big play in the second quarter when quarterback Enrique Jasso hit Lamar Housely on a 60-yard bomb.

By then it was 35-16 in favor of the Timberwolves, who further frustrated the Titans when Tyler Lewis turned a lateral into an 18-yard score.

From that point on – other than a 70-yard touchdown run by Jennings – it was all Sierra.

Paule scored on runs of 15, 7, and 20 yards in the second half.

“It’s the guys up front who got the job done,” said Harbison. “Mark has great quickness and vision.”

The Sierra defense tallied six turnovers.

Furthermore, the Timberwolves made a perfect 3-for-3 in closing out games with a fourth-quarter running clock.

Ripon Christian 27,
 Linden 23

Brian Sytsma was the hero of the night at Linden, as he came through with clutch plays to help the Knights remain unbeaten through two games.

His 4-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-goal gave Ripon Christian its only lead with 42 seconds remaining, then with 3 seconds to go he secured the victory by picking off Anthony Craven’s Hail Mary pass.

The 5-foot-9, 155-pound junior finished with 189 yards and two touchdowns on 29 rush attempts.

Linden (0-3) led 14-0 in the second quarter before Derek Dotinga put RC on board the board with a 2-yard run. The Knights didn’t tie it until late in the third when Billy Marr nailed Ethan McMurray for a 17-yard strike.

The two teams traded scores with missed PATs in the fourth. Maximo Rodriguez booted a 25-yard field goal with 5:24 to go for Linden’s final lead.
