BOYS HOOPS: Weston Ranch dispatches Gridley for 1st win

GRIDLEY — Weston Ranch picked up its first win of the season Friday, toppling tournament host Gridley 67-51 in the 66th annual Gridley Invitational.
The reigning Sac-Joaquin Section Division III champion Cougars (1-4) are playing the toughest non-league schedule among area teams. It doesn’t get any easier today against Capital Christian of Sacramento in the consolation final. Included in the prestigious eight-team tournament is Salesian, a team that joined Weston Ranch in the CIF State Open Division playoffs last season.
Weston Ranch used a balanced attack to overcome Gridley (5-2) and 6-foot-6 standout Grant Tull, who finished with 27 points and four blocks. The Bulldogs trailed 35-21 at halftime.
Mi’son Coilton paced the Cougars with 20 points, making five 3s in the process. Donjae Lindsey (six steals) and Kodey Weary (six rebounds, five blocks) scored 14 points apiece, while Gavin Wilburn added 11 points and nine rebounds.

Ripon Christian 60, Argonaut 46
JACKSON — Led by Jacob Van Groningen’s 24 points, the Knights (4-2) earned their spot in the Jackson Quarterback Club Tournament final after beating the host school. They face Amador tonight at 6:30.
It was tied 33-33 at halftime before Ripon Christian pulled away. Van Groningen knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers in the third quarter in that stretch. Reed Vander Hoek and Braden Van Groningen contributed 11 and nine points, respectively, while dominating the paint.

Turlock 58, East Union 52
TURLOCK — East Union (8-4) plays Beyer for third place today in the Frank Godinez Tournament after falling to the host team on Friday.
Lydell King led the Lancers with 20 points, Parm Khattra contributed 15 and Christian Cuevas had 12.
