Errors and missed opportunities proved costly Wednesday for the Ripon High varsity softball squad.

Against visiting Riverbank, the Indians were betrayed by four miscues, resulting in part to the five unearned runs in their 7-3 Trans Valley League loss.

“We shot ourselves in the foot,” said Ripon coach Robert Vernon.

The Indians (1-3, 7-5) had their scoring chances.

“We had chances in the second but made base-running mistakes,” said the Ripon coach.

The Indians jumped out to a 1-0 first-inning lead on a run produced by Tiana Chacon.

Riverbank tied the game at 1-1 in the second, breaking loose for four more in the third.

Ripon made it close in the fifth, scoring twice to pull to within a pair of runs, 5-3.

Riverbank got those runs back in the seventh.

The Indians relied on the pitching of Kirsten Mortimer, who allowed five hits along with a walk and two strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings of work.

Nicole Kaiser went the final 3 2/3 innings, surrendering three hits, two walks while fanning four.

Ripon collected eight hits led by Alissa Vickers, who was 2 for 4 with a pair of RBI and a double. Myranda Newhard went 2 for 3, driving in a pair of runs while connecting for a double.

Briana Gall and Taylor Vernon accounted for two other Ripon runs.

The Indians will face Orestimba on Friday.
