Denning tip seals title for Lathrop girls at Stagg High

STOCKTON – Jasmine Denning tipped in a missed free throw for the Spartans (5-0) with 19 seconds left in the game Saturday for the one-point lead and teammate Mary Cotton deflected an inbounds pass in the final seconds to preserve the 60-59 win and give Lathrop the Stagg Tournament title for the second year in a row. 

“We were really excited at the teams we were going to play in the tournament as they were all tough teams,” Spartans coach Dwayne Davis said. “Edison was one team that would try and match us speed for speed.

“It was back and forth with both teams going on runs, but the girls kept fighting back.”

Mary Cotton (11 points) was voted MVP and with the Vikings (4-2) focusing on Cotton she was able to find Denning who led Lathrop with 14 points.

Manteca 44, Pitman of Turlock 39

STOCKTON – Kyaira Jacobs led the Buffaloes (5-1) to third place with 17 points

at Lincoln High.

Jaslyn Woods added 11 points for Manteca and teammate Jayda Jackson was named to the All-Tournament team.

Ripon Christian 67,

Golden Sierra of Garden Valley 41

JACKSON – The Knights (4-3) changed their defense around and outscored the Grizzlies (3-5) 23-13 in the third quarter on the way to a third-place finish.

“When we switched up our defense we started to pull away from them,” Ripon Christian coach Ed Mulder said. “Taylor Anema slowed down their leading scorer and that’s when we started to pull away.” 

Rilee Clark (six rebounds, five assists) led the Knights with 15 points. Anema and Morgan Van Elderen (eight rebounds, seven assists) added 14 points each and Sarah Brown chipped in nine. Van Elderen was named to the All-Tournament team. 

Oakmont Tournament

Sierra 69, Natomas 62

The Timberwolves (5-1) won the battle of the boards 47-16 and took home the consolation championship.

“Our girls fought hard together this weekend,” Sierra coach Larissa Founts-Bergerson said. “I couldn’t be more proud.”

Natalie Dias was named MVP and had a double-double for the Timberwolves with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Inessa Villanueva led Sierra with 18 points, Dulce Cruz added 14 points and Jordan Hayter chipped in 11.

Lodi Tournament

Ripon 51, Mountain House 42

LODI – The Indians (3-2) took a 27-17 first-half lead and stayed in control the rest of the way for third place. 

Reina Sausedo led Ripon with a double-double at 17 points and 16 rebounds and Bianca Toledo added 10 points. Sydney Thomason pulled down 13 rebounds.    

“Reina was named to all-tournament team,” “She kept us in the flow of stuff.

“We had 48 rebounds and overall I think we played pretty decent this weekend.”

Weston Ranch 65, Bethel of Vallejo 51

STOCKTON – The Cougars (6-1) placed four players in double figures at Lincoln High.

Tournament MVP Donjae’ Lindsey led Weston Ranch with 26 points. Mi’Son Coilton was named to the all-tournament team and chipped in 12 points, Devin Small added 11 points and eight rebounds and Raul Melgarejo scored 10 points and made seven rebounds.

Sierra 39, Damonte Ranch of Reno 24

Kendrick Currey scored 13 points for the Timberwolves (6-2) who finished the tournament 2-2.

Ripon Christian 70,

Victory Christian of Carmichael 44

JACKSON – The Knights (4-3) outscored the Vikings (1-4) 19-4 in the second quarter of the third-place game. 

Cade Alger (26 points) and Will Gilbert (14 points) were named to the all-tournament team and Brock Nunes chipped in 12 points. 

“We were able to get good, high-percentage shots,” Ripon Christian coach Mark Hofman said. “And Cade was too much for them to handle.”
