Weston Ranch’s volleyball squad opened the Valley Oak League season with a competitive four-game loss (27-29, 25-22, 20-25, 11-25) at Kimball Wednesday.

The Cougars (0-1, 1-4) had a chance to start the match on a high note, but seven service errors did them in during the opening set.

“It’s not even that they beat us, we beat ourselves,” Weston Ranch coach Chris Bauer said. “It kind of set the tone, but the kids came back and battled to win a close second game. We have it in us, it’s just a matter of being consistent.”

Aoloni Etu set 19 assists, most of which went to Melanie Amen and Candisse Griffin, who slugged six kills apiece. Alex Marapao and Niki Rayray each came up with 18 digs, and Audreana Bigornia posted five aces.

Weston Ranch swept the sophomore match (25-11, 25-17) and dropped the freshman contest in three.
