East Union ended the Cosumnes Oaks Easter Tournament with two rough losses Tuesday in Folsom.

Sheldon outlasted the Lancers 11-8 in a nine-inning slugfest, and then East Union failed to get a hit against Lucas Still and Christian Brothers in a 7-0 defeat. East Union (7-6) capped the two-day tournament with a 2-2 record and will have the rest of the week to prepare for its two-game set with Manteca.

“In this tournament we had seven hits in our first game then 16 and 12 in the next two,” East Union coach Dan Triglia said. “We just couldn’t get the bats going in the last one. Overall, it was a very good tournament. We learned a lot and hopefully we can build on that going into league.”

The Lancers played catch-up early on against Sheldon and battled back from a 6-0 deficit to force extra innings. They had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the eighth when Jeremy Avalos led off with a walk. Andrew Ruiz bunted him over to second, where Avalos was left stranded. Sheldon answered with a four-run rally in the top of the ninth, which was highlighted by a home run.

Justin Ontiveros was 3 for 5 to lead EU. Lucas Garcia and Sam Robinson each contributed two knocks, and Brandon Ridgewell’s two-run triple in the bottom of the fifth jump started the comeback.

Starting pitcher Justin Nieto lasted just four innings, striking out eight while walking three. He allowed six runs and eight hits. Avalos, threw the final five innings in his first outing on the mound.

“Jeremy kept us in the game and gave us an opportunity to win,” Triglia said. “We couldn’t ask for him to do much more than that.”

In their tournament finale, the Lancers had no answer for Still, who issued three walks in his no-hit masterpiece. Trevor Huntoon (4 innings) and Jake Danhoff (2 innings) split pitching duties.



Fresno Easter Classic

Sierra 4, West 3

Kerman 4, Sierra 2

The Timberwolves (7-5-1) got a strong combined pitching effort from Marc Wilson and Jon Barry, who pitched a four-hitter in their win over West of Bakersfield. Jake Pruitt had two hits to lead the offense.

Kyle Oden shook off a rusty start from the mound for Sierra against Kerman, giving up three runs in the first before throwing five shutout innings. Dakota Conners cranked a triple in the afternoon game.

Sierra closes tourney action this morning against Central of Fresno.



Southern League

Ripon Christian 11, Denair 3

Jon Vander Molen (2 for 2, 3 runs) and Chris Saenz (3 for 4, 2 RBIs, 2 runs) each homered to power the Knights (5-0, 6-5-1 overall) to another Southern League victory.

Dominic Nelson came up with three knocks, and Travis Vander Molen drove in three runs with his two hits. Travis and Danny Vander Molen were RC’s pitchers.



Sophomore

Laguna Creek 6, East Union 2

East Union 1, River Valley 0 (8)

Gabe Chavez plated the lone run against River Valley after drawing a leadoff walk in the bottom of the eighth inning. Kyle Emerson’s sacrifice bunt was key. He also struck out five and scattered six hits in a five-inning pitching start. Marco Gonzales fanned four batters in three innings.

Emerson also shined in the first game, but his two hits were not enough. Vince Cabecerias was the losing pitcher despite racking up six strikeouts in four innings.
