Beyer remained undefeated in Western Athletic Conference boys volleyball with a back-and-forth 25-22, 23-25, 25-10, 21-25, 15-9 win over host Lathrop at Greg Leland Gym.
“That was a great game,” Spartans coach Toa Fa’ali’i said. “First of all, congratulations to Beyer. They came in ready to play, first and foremost. Beyer always means a great, great match for us.
“We tried to battle it out and it went to five. My boys stuck in there and they battled. We will take the ‘L’, and when we get back to practice, we will work on some stuff from tonight’s game.”
There were eight ties in the second set won 25-23 by Lathrop (1-2 WAC, 8-4 overall) with the last one at 19-19. A block and a kill by Gabriel Fa’ali’i (21 kills, four digs) and an ace by Jayden White (four kills) helped the Spartans get out to a 24-20 lead before the Patriots (3-0, 14-2) battled back to 24-23 before hitting the next volley out of bounds to give Lathrop the win.
The final set was tied for the third time at 5-5 before Beyer hammered out four kills in a row with an ace, two kills and a block accounting for the bulk of the scoring down the stretch for the Patriots who ended the game on a 6-2 run.
Marc Llorin added four kills for the Spartans and Jorge Reyes dished out 25 assists.
Brett Bird posted 29 kills for Beyer and Luke Rossi added 19 kills.
“I think a lot of this was on us,” Beyer coach Carl Wheeler said. “Our outsides had some uncharacteristic errors down the stretch and we missed some serves down the stretch. We have been behind before and we have been able to rely on our serving to help us get back in it to win sets. Those uncharacteristic errors let them hang along way too long
“More importantly I thought our middles had a really great night.”
Lathrop travels to Los Banos on Thursday night to face Pacheco at 6:30.
