RIPON — The 37th annual Jerry Terpsma Boys Soccer Classic did not start well for the two teams in town Friday at Ripon Christian.
The host Knights dropped their first-round match 7-1 to Bradshaw Christian of Sacramento, while Ripon was goose-egged 3-0 by Analy of Sebastopol.
Two of the Sac-Joaquin Section’s top small-school division clubs also advanced to the semifinals. Reigning Southern League and Sac-Joaquin Section Division VI champion Orestimba takes on Analy this morning at 9:30. Escalon, the reigning Trans-Valley League titlist and SJS Division V runner-up, plays Bradshaw.
Kyle Rivera scored the lone goal for Ripon Christian (1-1) early in the first half before Bradshaw gained control. The Knights upset the Pride 3-1 to open this tournament last season.
“We played them well last year and came in hoping to get a good result,” RC coach Christian Manes said. “We just came out a little flatter than we wanted and kind of struggled throughout the game.
Ripon Christian meets Big Valley Christian at 11 a.m.
Ripon (0-3) had its chances to score against Analy but could not capitalize. The Indians take on Stone Ridge Christian at 9:30 in the consolation semifinal.
“It was a back-and-forth game but for the most part Analy was in control,” Ripon coach Gabe Keenan said.

MODESTO — The Spartans (1-3) got the start they wanted but the momentum was short-lived.
Luis Vargas found the net with a header in the first five minutes of the match but was shaken up after colliding with the goalkeeper. He did not return to action.
“That killed the momentum,” Lathrop coach Alfredo Reynaga said. “We didn’t have that excitement after scoring a goal because the play was dead for about 3 minutes. Then we played one of our worst games so far.”
Lathrop closes with Waterford and Beyer today.
