COTTONWOOD — The trip ended up being much longer than the match.

Ripon did what was expected in a four-game victory (25-23, 25-14, 16-25, 25-22) over North Section champion West Valley to open the Northern California Regional Division IV Championships Tuesday.

Head coach Larry Keethe wasn’t too happy with his team’s effort in the third game, however.

“They were pretty much packed up and ready to go home,” he said.

Fortunately for the Indians (38-10), they don’t have to leave home for their semifinal match Saturday with Notre Dame Salinas to thank.

Notre Dame upset second-seeded Salesian of Richmond in five hotly-contested games (25-21, 28-26, 18-25, 24-26, 16-14) Tuesday.  Ripon hosts Notre Dame Saturday starting at 7 p.m.

“We got a little bit of the luck we wanted with Notre Dame winning,” Keethe said. “They’re a good team, but it’s nice to play at home.”

Ripon dominated at the net Tuesday, with several players contributing.

Cheyann DePrue led the attack with 13 kills, Coryn Hernandez and Ashley Robinson each had 11, and Lauren Feddersen added nine. Feddersen and Robinson also posted five blocks each.

Setter Kelsey Johnston recorded 48 assists, six digs and three aces.

West Valley (38-9) countered with middle blocker Ashley Vitellaro and outside hitter Paige Adkins but were overwhelmed by Ripon’s depth.

“They were a very scrappy team,” Keethe said of West Valley. “Our hitting and blocking were pretty good, but digging, passing and serving could have been better.”
