ROUNDUP: T’wolves get even with Oakdale in VOL boys tennis

 Sierra’s boys tennis team got clutch wins at No. 6 singles and No. 1 doubles on Tuesday to squeak out a 5-4 win over visiting Oakdale and even avenge its only loss of the season.

The Timberwolves are now 6-1 with three Valley Oak League matches remaining, and 10-1 overall.

Santiago Franco came through with the 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 comeback victory over Camden Knight in the No. 6 singles match. Sid Gopendran and Sparsh Beedi delivered the big doubles win, downing Levi Heasley and Austin Speiller, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6.

Unbeaten Brady Alves kept his perfect record intact with a 6-2, 6-1 sweep of Parker Whitemeyer at No. 1 singles.

Sierra won all three doubles matches. The No. 2 team of Ryan Alves and Harshith Kumar took care of Tristan McCarthy and Conner Hoenwater, 6-1, 6-1. Zain Ali and Alex Rey Rosario defeated Christian Wight and Max Birchall, 6-3, 6-0.


BOYS GOLF

VOL Tournament No. 3

Manteca’s Ethan Freitas led area players at Tracy Golf & Country Club with a 7-over 79, good for fifth place.

The Buffaloes as a team turned in the second best score with a 458. Oakdale topped the field with a 378 behind medalist Estuardo Duque’s 70 and runner-up Nolan Harris’ 71.

Gavin Goodwin contributed an 86 for Manteca. Cooper Chamberlain (91), Gael Juarez Salgado (95) and Alijah Hawkins (107) followed.

East Union and Sierra both finished with a 476.

Tiago Chadinha paced EU with an 84 and was backed by Michael Pires (87), Jacob Hayes (101), Kyle Van Arsdell (102) and Xavier Guerrero (102).

Cody Camarena carded an 87 for the Timberwolves. Jordann Llamas Majarro (89), Jake Llamas Majarro (97), Carson Murray (98) and Jace Neto (105) rounded out scoring.


BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Lathrop 3, Grace Davis 0

The Western Athletic Conference-leading Spartans (11-0, 20-5 overall) took care of business at home, 25-13, 25-9, 25-10.

Alexander Vere orchestrated the attack and finished with 32 assists and six aces. Gabriel Fa’ali’i put down 13 kills to go with two solo blocks and five digs. Marco Palomares contributed nine kills, three aces and two blocks.

Cameron Loyola added five kills and two blocks. Charles Reyes turned in 15 digs.


Ripon Christian 3, Orestimba 0

In Newman, the Knights (5-0, 12-3) prevailed in this first-place Southern Athletic League battle, 25-11, 25-15, 25-20.

Orestimba (5-1, 10-6) threatened to extend the match in the third set, but a scoring run that included five aces from Joel Hendricks helped Ripon Christian put it away.

Senior setter Preston Zuidervaart led the Knights with 12 assists, four blocks, two aces and two kills. Hendricks ended with nine aces to go with 17 assists. Mason Tameling clubbed 13 kills and had two blocks. Darren Van Groningen chipped in seven kills, four blocks and two aces. Isaac Venema had six kills and three blocks.


JV boys volleyball

Lathrop 2, Grace Davis 0

Lathrop held on to win 25-18, 25-21.

Elias Medel led the way with nine kills, three aces and five digs. Diego Alvarez, Cayden Phaing and Richard Truong each had four kills.

Mario Luna distributed 22 assists, and Josh Ramirez racked up with 11 digs.
