Ripon’s coed tennis team continued its undefeated start to the season on Tuesday, opening Trans Valley League play at home with a 5-4 win over newcomer River Islands.

The Indians (1-0 TVL, 5-0 overall) swept the boys and girls doubles matches. Included was a pivotal 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 comeback from the No. 2 boys pairing of John Yeung and Jordan Sandoval. Their top boys team of Max Ferral and Emilio Machado Perez outlasted Vishnu Sidarth Thagilam and Hrishi Vijay, 6-2, 7-5.

Ripon dominated at girls doubles, getting sweeps from No. 1 Sophie Douglas/Alyssa Lan (6-0, 6-2) and No. 2 Abby Douglas/Molly Berger (6-2, 6-2). Brookelyn Betschart got the Indians’ lone singles win at No. 1 girls, as she knocked off Tanishka Singh, 6-1, 6-2.

Kayzin Zarni got the No. 2 girls singles win for River Islands 6-3, 6-2 against Lily Meyer. Sai Pranad and Sai Nagavarapu cruised at Nos. 1 and 2 boys singles, respectively, with 6-0, 6-0 victories.

River Islands (0-2, 1-2) got the edge at mixed doubles, as Pranay Cheganti and Anushka Yadunandan ground out the 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 victory over David Rodriguez and Emiley Wang.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Manteca 3, Ripon Christian 2

Two-way efforts from Rob Hevener and Logan Romriell helped the Buffaloes (8-2) fend off the reigning Sac-Joaquin Section Division III champion Knights (2-2), 22-25, 25-20, 27-25, 19-24, 15-6.

Romriell finished a kill shy of a double-double, picking up 18 digs. Hevener was active at the net, where he contributed seven kills and 10 blocks.

Jesus Gomez led the attack with 15 kills. Drew Woodruff had 13 digs, and setter Chandler Harris dished out 27 assists.

Ripon Christian won the JV match, 19-25, 25-23, 15-11.

BASEBALL

Lathrop 7, Grace Davis 6 (8)

In a game that included eight hit batters, it was only fitting that the Western Athletic Conference opener ended with one.

Lathrop (1-0, 4-7) walked it off on a bases-loaded hit by pitch in the eighth inning for its fourth overall win in a row. Lathrop found a way to get the result despite just getting five hits. The Spartans were walked 10 times, stole 12 bases and Grace Davis (0-1, 1-5) committed five errors.

Jaicob Ewing went 2 for 4 with two RBIs to lead the Lathrop attack. Vaughn Sanchez drew three walks, while Landen Nolte and Tommy Hammond each plated two runs.

Hammond was also the winning pitcher after throwing three scoreless innings in relief, giving up just four hits and no walks.

SOFTBALL

Linden 15, Ripon 9 (9)

After the two teams scored one run apiece in the eighth inning, the visiting Lions (1-3) exploded for six at the top of the ninth to escape with the non-league win.

It was a wild back-and-forth that featured 33 total hits.

Izabelle Spurzem packed the biggest punch for the Indians (7-3), going 3 for 4 with a homer, a triple, three runs and three RBIs. Addison Naranjo also plated three runs, finishing 4 or 5.

Ellie Spurzem knocked in a pair of runs in her 2-for-4 effort. Angelina Martinez (double, two RBIs) and Clara Townsend (run) both went 2 for 5.
