Katie Kim had to wait an extra year to have another shot at the Valley Oak League singles title, and this time she didn’t miss.

The Manteca High junior defeated Central Catholic’s Katherine Juarez 6-3, 6-2 in the final round Thursday at Manteca Regional Tennis Center, adding to the VOL doubles championship he earned two years ago. She dominated her matches during the pandemic-shortened spring season, but a year-end tournament was not held.

“When I was freshman I wasn’t able to make it (to the singles final), but I was glad to be able to do the doubles tournament (with Sahiba Kaur) because we had a good relationship and we did pretty well,” Kim said. She and Kaur went on to take second in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II Individual Tournament.

“This year, I’m glad to be able to make it to the bigger tournament in singles.”

She’ll be the only athlete from Manteca Unified schools to Johnson Ranch Racquet Club in Roseville for the Section tournament Nov. 4-5.

“I know there are really good people there so I look forward to competing at that level,” Kim added.

She was able to ward off a few nervy moments Thursday. She shot out to a 3-0 lead in the second set but gave up the next two games mostly because of unforced errors.

“Katherine is a good player and I was a little nervous — I always get a little nervous,” she said. “I guess I wasn’t really in the right space and everything wasn’t working out, but in the end I was able to pull through.”

The doubles title is guaranteed to go to VOL team champ Central Catholic.

Top-seeded Victoria Borba and Caden Wilson knocked off Weston Ranch’s surprising tandem of Ella Nykanen and Harvir Hotti in the semifinals and will face fellow Raiders Mianna Robinson and Maria Freitas in the final today at Central Catholic. Nykanen and Hotti lost to CC’s Kiley Freitas and Adrianna Saldivar in the third-place match. Only the finalists in both singles and doubles qualify for the Section tourney.
