Sierra’s Teresa Benham has confidence.
With visiting Johansen a point away from taking the second set on Tuesday, Benham flew up from the back row for a kill to tie the game — the first of three straight Sierra points. The Timberwolves went on to sweep the nonleague contest, 25-22, 26-24, 25-21.
“It is mostly teamwork,” Benham said. “It all starts with the pass. When you have a good pass and a good set, it sets up the hit.”
Benham finished with six kills — three from the back row — a block and an ace.
After Benham tied the second set at 24-24, Savannah Guzman (four kills, three aces) planted an ace to put Sierra (1-3) ahead by one. Dulce Cruz (seven kills, two blocks two aces) ended the second set at 26-24 with a block.
“It was a team effort,” Cruz said. “We have been practicing on talking and working as a team and we are getting there.”
Sierra fell behind early in every set, but kept battling to force on tie after another before escaping with the win. In the second set alone, there were five ties after 18-18.
“We have been working on coverage and tipping,” Timberwolves coach Trinity Johnson said. “I think it is finally getting through to them and they are starting to work like a team and gel, and that really showed tonight.”
The Timberwolves had five kills from the back row and totaled 14 aces.
“We are figuring out who can hit where,” Johnson said. “And we have to use our assets whether they are in the front row or the back row.”
Stella Brierly had five kills and an ace for Sierra, Ashlee-Lynn Matteroli had 17 digs, five aces, a kill and a block, Sophia Schmiedt buried three aces, Kylie Machado had seven digs and freshman Faythe Rullan planted a key back-row kill late in the third set.
The Vikings fall to 5-5.
