SONORA – The trip east did not go according to plan for the Weston Ranch boys basketball team, dropping its Valley Oak League contest with Sonora High 61-45 Wednesday.

The Cougars (8-2 VOL, 12-9 overall) could do nothing to stop their five-game VOL winning streak from halting, trailing the Wildcats for nearly the entire contest.

“Sonora just outplayed us in every aspect of the game,” Weston Ranch head coach Ryan Bono said. “Unfortunately things just did not go our way.”

Nate Moises did all he could do in a losing effort, leading the Cougras with 17 points and seven boards. Jason Steele had a solid effort, pacing the Cougars with six assists to go along with 10 points and nine rebounds. Marcus Woods rounded out the Weston Ranch leading scorers with eight and also pulled down six rebounds.

Weston Ranch will try and get back on the right track Friday when they play host to the Ceres Bulldogs. Ceres got the better end of the two squads’ last meeting, beating the Cougars 68-58 Jan. 13.

RIVERBANK – The Riverbank Bruins outscored the Knights 11-9 after the first period of play and entered halftime trailing by just three, but a 19-4 Ripon Christian third quarter gave the Knights control in their 59-32 Trans Valley League win over the Bruins.

Mikaela Alger led the Knights with 21 points and teammate Raeann De Rousse added a dozen. Alger also turned in a game-high 16 rebounds to control the glass.

Ripon Christian (3-3 TVL, 9-11) will try and keep its momentum going when they make the short trek to Escalon to battle the Cougars Monday.
