STOCKTON — Amaya Finley is getting out of Dodge and heading to Fort Dodge, home of the Iowa Central College Tritons.

On Thursday, the Weston Ranch High senior made it official, signing on to play volleyball for the Tritons.

“I went to visit (Iowa Central) during the summer and loved it,” said Finley, who also plays volleyball for the Infinity travel team.

She was joined by friends, teammates, family members, school officials and coaches during her signing event in the Weston Ranch gymnasium following the fall awards night.

No surprise, Finley, who plans to study Criminal Justice, was named Most Valuable Player for the Cougars.

She’s been a standout since arriving at Weston Ranch as sophomore. Finley transferred from Pleasanton.

Her parents, Rochelle and Horacio, along with her grandmother Millie also shared in this special occasion.

The athletic outside hitter garnered three All-Valley Oak League first-league selections in her time at Weston Ranch, which went 4-10 in league and 12-14 overall this past season. She’ll join an Iowa Central club that is 30-10 and captured the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Region XI-B championship. 

Weston Ranch coach Eddie Menzel hailed Finley as a leader with a good feel for the game, a solid all-around skill set and work ethic.

“As a person, she is a great young woman,” Menzel said. “She works hard in the classroom and is a good person with high character at all times. Something Iowa Central should be excited about is that they are getting not only a high-quality volleyball player but a high-quality person with a strong support system that they will never have to worry about having problems with at any time. 

“She has worked very hard for this and we couldn’t be more proud of her.”
