Stanford to retire John Elway’s No. 7 jersey: STANFORD (AP) — Stanford football is finally retiring John Elway’s No. 7 jersey.

The former Cardinal quarterback and No. 1 overall pick of the 1983 NFL draft will have his jersey retired during halftime of Stanford’s home game against Oregon on Nov. 7. Elway, now the executive vice president of the Denver Broncos, will join Ernie Nevers’ No. 1 and Jim Plunkett’s No. 16 as the only jerseys the school has enshrined.

Wide receiver Ty Montgomery and defensive end Aziz Shittu both wear No. 7 currently. They will be the last two to wear the jersey at Stanford.

Elway said in a statement that “I am extremely humbled that Stanford has chosen to recognize me in this very special way.”



Packers sign QB Vince Young as backup: GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The Green Bay Packers have signed free agent Vince Young as a backup quarterback.

The Packers looked at their options after No. 3 quarterback B.J. Coleman threw two interceptions in the team’s intrasquad scrimmage Saturday night, and decided to go with Young. The No. 2 quarterback behind Aaron Rodgers is Graham Harrell.

Young was the third overall pick in the 2006 NFL draft. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound quarterback spent five seasons with the Tennessee Titans and one season with the Philadelphia Eagles. He was with the Buffalo Bills during the 2012 preseason.

The Packers also signed wide receiver Justin Wilson on Tuesday. The rookie from Delaware State took part in the Packers’ rookie orientation camp in May.

Also, wide receiver Sederrik Cunningham was placed on injured reserve.



Cooper back with Eagles after excused absence: PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Wide receiver Riley Cooper returned to the Philadelphia Eagles Tuesday after a four-day excused absence to undergo sensitivity training after he was caught on film yelling a racial slur before a Kenny Chesney concert.

Cooper, in his fourth year out of the University of Florida, seemed remorseful during an eight-minute press conference with the media after the Eagles and New England Patriots began what will be a three-day practice routine before Friday night’s preseason opener.

Video of Cooper’s racial slur surfaced Wednesday. He was immediately fined an undisclosed amount by the team, but was not suspended. Ironically, two days earlier he was promoted to the starting lineup after Jeremy Maclin suffered a season-ending injury.

Tony Stewart has surgery following Iowa crash: KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (AP) — Tony Stewart underwent successful surgery Tuesday to repair the broken right tibia and fibula suffered in a sprint car race in Iowa.

Stewart will need a second surgery and remains hospitalized. There was no timetable for his return.

Stewart-Haas racing named Max Papis as the substitute driver in the No. 14 for Sunday’s NASCAR race at Watkins Glen. Papis has made 35 career Sprint Cup starts.

Stewart was leading the 30-lap feature in a 360 winged sprint car with five laps remaining when a lapped car spun in Turn 4 and collected Stewart and two others.

The sprint car accident Monday night came a day after Stewart finished ninth in the NASCAR race at Pocono Raceway. He’s 11th in the Sprint Cup standings with five races to go until the Chase for the championship field is set.

Isner’s loss means no US men in next week’s top 20: MONTREAL (AP) — Next week, for the first time in 40 years of ATP rankings, there will be no American men in the top 20.

That’s because John Isner, who is 20th this week, is assured of dropping lower after losing Tuesday in the first round of the Rogers Cup to Vasek Pospisil of Canada 5-7, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4).

Isner was a semifinalist at the hard-court tournament last year and failed to defend those points.

It’s the latest indication of the recent decline of U.S. men’s tennis.

At Wimbledon in June, for the first time in 101 years, no men from the country reached the third round at the All England Club. The last time no American men got that far there, way back in 1912, none entered.



Venus Williams loses at Rogers Cup in Toronto: TORONTO (AP) — Venus Williams lost in her first match in more than two months, falling 0-6, 6-4, 6-2 Tuesday to Kirsten Flipkens at the Rogers Cup

Williams lost in the first round of the French Open on May 26. The 33-year-old Williams also missed Wimbledon, after 16 consecutive appearances, because of a lower back injury.

Maria Kirilenko and Ana Ivanovic won in straight sets to advance to the second round. Kirilenko cruised past qualifier Petra Martic 6-2, 6-1, and Ivanovic defeated Su-Wei Hsieh 6-1, 6-2.

In other matches, American qualifier Lauren Davis edged Svetlana Kuznetsova 3-6, 7-5, 7-5, and Dominika Cibulkova stopped Angelique Kerber 6-7 (0), 6-2, 7-5 in the Rexall Centre at York University.
