MASL teams produce mixed results at Founders Cup

The St. Anthony’s 6th grade girls basketball team won the Stockton Diocese Catholic Youth Organization championship. The top-seeded Roadrunners, who went 10-2 in the regular season, edged St. Luke’s of Stockton 18-17 in the playoff finals. MORGAN HILL — Manteca Area Soccer League’s under-14 boys Sporting went 2-1 during the California Youth Soccer Association Founders’ Cup this past weekend.

Sporting had little trouble dealing with the elements in its tournament opener against Petaluma, which was blown out, 8-1.

Sporting was led by Sergio Meniola, Franklin Guardado and Eduardo Avalos, who each netted two goals. Avalos was also the first-half goalie, and Daniel Botelho kept Petaluma scoreless in the second. Also contributing with a goal apiece were Eric Avalos and Carlos Reyes. Jordan Moreno chipped in with assists.

The Oakland Soccer Club’s Jr. Gallos handed Sporting its only defeat of the weekend in the second round, 4-2. Guardado accounted for both of Sporting’s scores, which were assisted by Simon Torres.

Guardado struck one last time in the final match, a 1-0 win over Mission Viejo. Daniel Botelho had several key saves to highlight the shutout.
Sporting’s season continues this weekend at the CYSA State Cup back in Morgan Hill.

MASL Heat
Under-10 boys

LIVERMORE — The MASL Heat had one win, one loss and one tie at Robertson Park Dec. 5 and 6.

The Heat opened with a bang, squeaking out a 1-0 victory over Delta White Lightning. Trent Rivera hooked up with Tyler Soulier for the match’s lone goal in the second half. Enrique Perez and Santino Guevara combined efforts for the shutout at goal, and Miguel Nieblas was the standout defender.

Perez and Guevara did their part again but recording their second straight clean sheet in a scoreless tie vs. Valley Liddell United. Jacob Garcia, Ceaser Diaz-Patino, Arthuer Cardova and Jacob Nagy played well.

The Manteca team engaged in a shootout in its final Founders’ Cup appearance, dropping a 4-3 loss to the El Dorado Hills Flames. The Heat trailed 4-1 at half but mounted an impressive comeback. The Flames advance to next week’s final round.

Rivera led the charge with two goals and an assist, while Soulier added a goal and an assist.

Manteca Rangers
Under-14 girls

FRESNO — The Manteca Rangers posted two wins and two ties to win the Chuck Power Winter Classic.

Manteca opened with 1-1 and 2-2 draws against the Ceres Earthquakes and Sonoma Riot, respectively, on Saturday. The Rangers went on to beat Oakdale and the Fresno Odyssey by 1-0 scores. Katelyn Rosas’ penalty kick decided the championship match.

The Rangers are gearing up for next month’s State Cup.

Manteca Futbol Club

The fourth-year Manteca Futbol Club hosted the NorCal Premier State Cup on Nov. 14-15 and 21-22, and Dec. 5-6 at Woodward Park. Brackets were set up according to skill: Super, Premier, Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze.

A total of 336 matches were played on the opening weekend, culminating into the final rounds involving 88 teams on Nov. 22.

Some of Manteca FC’s own teams took advantage of the homefield. The under-9 boys Flames and under-10 Jr. Pumas claimed titles in the Super Division, while the under-9 girls Flames (Premier) and under-9 girls United (Gold) and under-9 Rebels (Bronze) reached the finals. The under-10 boys Bocas was eliminated in the semifinals of the Premier Division.

The under-11 boys and girls quarter and semifinals were played on Dec. 5-6, with 104 boys and 80 girls teams participating. The under-11 girls Red Devils battled their way into this weekend’s finals in Woodland. The under-11 boys Boca Red had its run ended by the Mid-Peninsula Strikers, 3-1.

Lancer Youth Club

MODESTO — Jaysen Reindel grinded out a first-place finish in the 112-pound novice division of the Beyer High Tournament Sunday.
Bobby Dominguez took third at the 98-pound middle school division. The Lancer Youth Wrestling Club will next see action at Los Banos High Dec. 20.
