SALIDA — After a tough first inning on the mound Monday night, Ripon’s Logan Kootstra blanked Morada the rest of the way, as Ripon came back for a walk-off win to advance to tonight’s Section 6 11U championship round against Turlock at 7 at Salida.
Kootstra got roughed up in the first inning, yielding four runs on five hits before allowing just one baserunner the rest of the way with four 1-2-3 innings, striking out eight against five hits and no walks.
With the score tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth, Jackson Hendryk (2 for 3, RBI, run) and Kootstra (2 for 3) tallied back-to-back singles followed by a Timmy Swails walk to load the bases. Hendryk then scurried home on a wild pitch to give Ripon the win.
Brett Yamasaki walked to start the game for Ripon and scored on Hendryk’s single to make the score 1-0. Bo Brayton blasted a one-out grounder down the first-base line that was misplayed, flying all the way around the bases to make the score 4-2. Isaiah Sonke followed with a single, went to second on Tanner Haveman’s base hit and came home when while stealing third the ball sailed into left field, bringing Ripon within 4-3.
Ripon tied the game in the fourth inning. Brayden Viss reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second and came home on Carlos Blanco’s single. Blanco made a highlight-reel diving catch at second base for the first out of the Morada fifth inning.
Ripon scored eight runs in the bottom of the third inning Saturday, opening the tournament with a 15-0 trouncing of Calaveras.
Haveman (2 for 3, three RBI, double, two runs), Swails (double, run) Kootstra (two runs) Rhett Yamasaki (two runs) and Troy Nascimento (run) led the Ripon attack.
Kootstra started on the mound, striking out seven with no hits over 2.1 innings with Sonke coming on in relief.
Ripon was dispatched to the consolation round Sunday after Turlock scored seven runs in the fourth inning on the way to an 11-0 win.
Haveman tallied one hit in two at bats.
