JACKSON — It took an all-around team effort Wednesday for Ripon to bounce back from a heart-breaking loss on Tuesday and hold on for a 5-4 win over Morada in the championship game of the Northern California Section 6 10-under all-star tournament at John Aime Field.

Jacob Petersen and Derek Ponce handled the pitching duties for Ripon. Petersen pitched into the fifth inning, allowing two unearned runs on two hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Ponce mopped things up, striking out three and allowing two unearned runs.

“Jacob (Petersen) was lights out and has been our ace all year along with Elias (Sandoval),” Ripon coach Marcos Sandoval said. “They both have been great, and I knew coming into this game that after beating Elias last night they couldn’t beat them both.

“At the end I thought we had it. Derek (Ponce)had been great for us all year. I had confidence in him and I knew he could get it done.”

Elias Sandoval had the big hit of the day for Ripon, belting a two-run home run in the third inning, scoring Gavin Cloward (3 for 3, two runs) and giving Ripon a 4-1 lead. In the first inning Dylan Jasper singled Cloward in and in the second Ponce came in on Pete Winters’ hit.

In the top of the sixth Travis Koolhaas gave Ripon a much needed insurance run on a single by Ryder Hall to put Ripon ahead 5-2 before Morada closed the game to 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth.

Ripon advances to the NorCal State championships on Friday in Eureka.
