100 years ago, on August 8, 1913, Manteca still keeps in the limelight as an aggressive ball team and the long string of victories remains unbroken, causing the old leaguers to rub their eyes and take notice of the stellar brand of goods being dished out. Last Sunday, they handed the goose egg to the Sperry Flour aggregation of Stockton in a game that was full of ginger from start to finish. Lagorio was a puzzle to the visitors, retiring 13 batters and allowing but two hits, while the White Sox obtained six hits and lost nine via the strikeout route. The final score was 3 to 0. Kyle Potter got two hits for Manteca.

80 years ago: August 10, 1933 – Softball became the rage of Manteca with a suddenness that has served to throw the sales tax and the NRA worries into the background. It was the game Sunday morning that aroused the greatest excitement. The game was between the firemen team and an aggregation hastily assembled by Constable Jimmy Rawleigh. At the end of the fifth inning, the score stood 14 to 0 in favor of the Rawleigh team. At the end of the sixth inning, the scorekeeper was found under the shade of a tree recovering from the ordeal.



40 years ago: August 8, 1973 – Occidental Chemical scored seven runs in the first inning Friday night, and then coasted to a 9-2 victory in the Junior League championship series. Winning pitcher David Perry also led the hitters with two singles, while losing Rotary Club’s Emory Scriven stroked two doubles.



30 years ago: August 9, 1983 – All prospective Manteca High athletes for the fall season are reminded that time for mandatory physicals is approaching. Varsity and sophomore football players will have their physicals conducted a 6 p.m. this Friday. Physicals for girls’ volleyball, cross country and basketball will be held at the same time on August 16 and physicals for members of the freshman football, boys cross country and basketball will be at 6 p.m. on August 18.

Free physical examinations for East Union High’s male fall athletes will be given August 15 at 6 p.m., with physicals for female athletes to follow a week after on August 22. Both sets of physicals will be given in the girls’ team room on the East Union campus and all athletes should bring their physical forms, already completed, to the examination. The forms can be picked up at EU’s guidance center. Only fall athletes will be examined. Physicals for the remaining athletes will be arranged at a later date.



20 years ago: August 1993 – Both local high schools have scheduled fall sports physicals starting this week. There will be a $10 fee for physicals done by either high school. All checks should be made out to the Manteca Unified School District. Forms are currently available at both schools’ front office during the day time for students who wish to have examinations by their own physician. All forms must be completed and returned before any athlete may participate in any practice. 



10 years ago: August 12, 2003 – Sierra High soccer coach Manuel Pires will lean on stellar seniors Araia Berhane, Joe Pires, Todd Pierce, Chris Serrano, Jesus Acuna and Jason Dalton to lead the team into the 2003 season. Berhane is coming back after a first-team All-league performance last season.
