10 years ago: October 11, 2006 – The Manteca High soccer team kept its lofty perch atop the Valley Oak League standings with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Weston Ranch High in Stockton Tuesday. Senior Jorge Belmonte netted the only score of the night in the first few minutes of play.
Melanie Promes’ spike capped Tuesday’s Manteca High sweep of Sierra High’s volleyball team, scoring a 25-20, 25-15, 25-23 victory. Promes ended up with seven kills, five blocks and three aces to lead the Buffaloes. Kayla Huarte handed out 26 assists in the win. Sarah Corbett turned in six kills, blocks, digs and points for the Timberwolves.
East Union High’s volleyball team got itself back on track with a 3-0 sweep of the Central Valley High team on Tuesday evening. Megan Spinks and Kayla Carrillo tallied up 21 total kills during the Lancers’ 26-24, 25-10, 25-19 VOL victory at the Dalben Center. Kim Brooks dished out 25 assists and finished with nine kills, along with a pair of blocks. Stephanie Swift added 10 digs to the Lancers’ statistics.
Krista Clark and Ellen Parker of the East Union High golf team were on top of their games during Tuesday’s VOL contest at Van Buskirk Park in Stockton. Clark and Parker shared medalist honors as each shot a 43 on the par-36 course to beat Weston Ranch High, 243-286.
At the Manteca Park golf course, Manteca High defeated Central Valley High 297-348 as Kaylee Joaquin carded a 36 to lead the Buffs.
In Ceres, the Sierra High golf team cleared Ceres High by 63 strokes as the T’wolves took a 166-229 win at the River Oak Golf Course. Julie Shutler and Carol Dias both carded 29’s for medalist honors.
East Union High handed the host Manteca High tennis squad a lopsided 11.5-3.5 loss Tuesday. EU was led by the singles play of Desiree Haroldson and Amanda Barker. Each swept their matches. The Lancer doubles play was also solid, with Kristen Benedict-Haylai Mohammadi also sweeping their matches. Manteca’s No.2 tandem of Ericka Rice-Nicole Osborn won a close match.
Sierra High downed Weston Ranch High 10-5 in tennis action yesterday with stellar doubles play from the pair of T’wolf doubles teams. Raeanne Quaresma-Nicole Vanni won both on their matches, as did the duo of Nyka Cartago-Stephanie Teunissen.
Firing off 30 shots on goal, the Sierra High soccer team downed visiting Sonora High 2-1. The T’wolves were in full control as Ricky Victor ended up scoring both of Sierra’s goals.
