2007: Yrigoyens two-run homer sparks Sierra ein

10 years ago: May 9, 2007 – Visiting East Union High scored all of its runs on back-to-back RBI singles from Courtney Perry and Brionna Goulart in the second inning to lead the Lancers to a 2-0 victory over Weston Ranch High in VOL softball action Tuesday.  EU pitcher Erin Arevalo was her usual dominating self, striking out 15 in a one-hitter.

Bottom of the seventh inning, two outs, bases loaded, tie score—Manteca High junior Amber Nunnally looped a hit to left field to drive in Trina Solario with the winning run in a 4-3 win for the Lady Buffs over Sierra High in softball action yesterday. Nunnally finished with a three-for-three effort at the plate, driving a pair of runs and scoring once. Solario added three more hits to the MHS total.

Garrett Yrigoyen’s two-run homer that cleared the right-centerfield fence in the fifth inning sparked host Sierra High’s 5-3 come-from-behind victory over Central Valley High on Friday. Yrigoyen added a single and a double to his output on the afternoon.

Amber Omstead scored the game’s only goal with just four minutes to play Thursday as visiting East Union High edged Manteca High 1-0 in soccer action at Guss Schmiedt Field.

The visiting Sierra High soccer team wrapped up the regular season Thursday with a 4-0 shutout of Weston Ranch High in Stockton. Nicole Vanni scored twice for Coach Manuel Pires’s T’wolves, while Kayla Cody and Stephanie Teunissen netted one each.

East Union High’s Taylor Edwards won all three distance events to account for 15 points in the Lancers’ 64-55 win over Manteca High in a track meet yesterday. In the girls’ competition, EU collected first-place finishes in every track event and the two throws to coast, 72-27. Abdiel Martinez-Ramos joined Edwards on the multi-winner list with top finishes in the high jump and the discus throw. Andre Patterson paced the Buffaloes with wins in the 100-meter dash and in the long jump.  For the girls, Lancer standouts Sheniece Vargas (sprints) and Kristina Hammarstrom (distance) each turned in three first-place finishes. For MHS, Karen Marks was a triple winner, taking firsts in the high jump, long jump and triple jump.

The Sierra High track team dominated Ceres High Wednesday with the boys taking a 105-28 win and the girls claiming an 81-41 win. Returning state qualifier Avery White easily won the 110 and 300-meter hurdles for SHS. Dirinna Uwakwe scored wins in the 100 and 200, Derek Sinclair claimed both throwing events and Palmer Thiele won the mile and two-mile races.
