Here’s a riddle: What costs at least $1,500 a day to run in electricity, has 250,000 lights, includes 6 inches of ice, and has a reindeer named Rodolfo?

The answer is the third edition of Dell’Osso Farms’ Holidays on the Farm that opens Friday.

The $1,500 plus daily PG&E bill is just to power one piece of equipment - the artificial snow machine that pumps out the fake white stuff 24/7 for the snow tubing hill. The melt is great enough that it actually recycles through the machine every 24 hours. The machine imported from Japan churns out 100 tons of snow a day. It will go non-stop until Holidays on the farms closes on Jan. 1. It pumps 60 gallons of water a minute to turn into snow.

The 250,000 lights are part of the drive-thru Christmas scenes light display.

The ice rink is kept at a nice cool 20 degrees and is six inches thick. It is groomed throughout the day by the only Zamboni in Lathrop. This year there will be double-bladed skates available instead of just  single-blade skates.

Dell’Osso Farms has two authentic reindeer- Rodolfo and Pumpkin. Rodolfo isn’t an Italian version of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. It is named in honor of longtime farmer Rudolf “Rudy” Dell’Osso.  You can hear a clacking sound when the reindeer walk that is produced by a tendon in the hooves which helps them travel in deep snow.

They have 23,000 hairs per square inch with the hollow hair under layer helping keep them warm while the upper layer wards off the cold. As for their noses, they feature nasal turbinate bones that increase the area inside the nostrils significantly. That way the reindeer’s body heat warms cold air before it heads to the lungs.

Holidays on the Farms also features other attractions that are free and others that have a price such as using  the zip line.
