Ever wonder why Manteca Unified School District started combining varsity basketball games for boys and girls teams on Friday nights?
It was the outgrowth of a complaint filed with the federal Office of Civil Rights regarding East Union, Manteca, and Sierra high schools.
The settlement with federal civil rights bureaucrats reached in August 2012 required improvement to softball fields and an equivalent amount of Friday night girls and boys varsity basketball games and equivalent participation of band and cheerleading at the hoop games for both genders.
The school district was asked in June to prove they were still complying with the federal directive. They did so by sending schedules of the girls and boys basketball games from the 2013-2014 season to the 2016-2017 season.

The Pappas family’s first scholarships were awarded in May to three Manteca Unified graduating seniors so they can attend Modesto Junior College.
The Pappas Foundation is specifically targeting students with potential leadership qualities who, without financial help, would be unable to attend college. Students are expected to take at least 12 units a semester and maintain a 2.5 grade point average or higher to qualify for a continuing scholarship. It covers tuition, books and supplies including a computer capped at $3,000 a year.
John and Eugenia Pappas graduated from Manteca High as did their mother and five siblings. All three of John and Eugenia Pappas’ children attended MJC as did two of their uncles.

cargo jet flight for
for Stockton Airport
Amazon this month added a second daily cargo jet flight into Stockton Metro Airport and plans to add a third next month as part of its strategy to cut shipping costs connected with their Amazon Prime one and two day delivery efforts.
The first Boeing 767 cargo jet started flying in and out of Stockton in February in conjunction with the Tracy fulfillment center 17 miles away and the Patterson fulfillment center 38 miles away from the airport
The cargo jet shipping has created almost 40 jobs at the airport so far.
