RIPON — An 18-year-old Ripon teen was reportedly jumped by a gang of five Sunday afternoon when he went to the Ripona School basketball area in the playground to have a game with a group of friends, police said.

He said when he arrived at the school he was confronted by the suspects who asked him if he was a gang member.  After responding that he had no gang affiliation he was struck from behind by one of the subjects and the other boys joined in the attack, Ripon Police reported.

The teen suffered a broken wrist while defending himself, officers said.

Police located one 20-year-old in possession of a tire iron.  Richard Martin was arrested for possession of a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit a crime and for fighting in a public place.

Backup officers located three juveniles leaving the area.  One 14-year-old Ripon youth was taken into custody for violation of his probation.  He was issued a citation and later released to a parent at the scene, police said.

Investigators are following up on the attack and are attempting to identify outstanding suspects involved in the incident.  Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Sgt. Steve Merchant at 599-0262.
