Ripon, RC out in first round of coed tennis playoffs

 Eighth-seeded Ripon dropped a competitive 7-2 decision to visiting Lindhurst in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I coed playoffs on Thursday.

The No. 9 Blazers of Olivehurst travel to top-seeded Amador for the second round next Tuesday.

Sahaj Gill accounted for one of Ripon’s wins, as he took down Eden Yang 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 1 boys singles match. The No. 2 boys doubles team of Samuel and Santiago Avendano swept Preston Vang and James Her, 6-3, 6-4.

Lindhurst got two three-set victories at No. 2 boys singles and No. 1 girls doubles. Steven Vang came back to beat Levi Lundrigan, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. Evonne Yang and Hope Xiong held off Giselle Luna and Natalie Vu, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.

Lindhurst won the rest in sweeps: Naly Vue defeated Liky Meyer 6-3, 6-4 in No. 1 girls singles; Kaely Meniel defeated Molly Berger 6-4, 6-4 in No. 2 girls singles; Ethan Lee/Kenneith Yang defeated Gideon Waters/Tate Doubles 6-3, 6-4 in No. 1 boys doubles; Isabel Her/Trynity Xiong defeated Mia Weeks/Ella Parons 6-0, 6-1 in No. 2 girls doubles; and Isaac Usuat/Autumn Vang defeated Matthew Tharakan/Mia Blancarte 6-0, 6-1 in mixed doubles.


DIVISION II

Bear River 6, Ripon Christian 3

Seeded fifth, Ripon Christian met Bear River in the postseason for a third straight year but this time had to make the trek to Grass Valley.

The Knights eked out their three wins for the day.

At No. 2 boys singles, Alton Mensonides outlasted Ethan Hurt, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. The No. girls doubles tandem of Laura Thomson and Alyssa Bakker ground past Jude Slater and Kiara Glaspey, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. Josh Miller and Sophia Cheney swept the mixed doubles contest 7-6 (3), 6-3 against Jack Woody and Shelland Salac.

Ripon Christian also had some valiant efforts in defeat. Peter Vander Meulen and Trevor Van Elderen fell at No. 1 doubles 6-4, 5-7, 1-6 to Andrew Kolb and Tallon Smith. The Knights’ top girls doubles team of Brynn Bohn and Dayna Koolhaas were edged out 5-7, 5-7 by Jillian Kodai and Faith Johnson.

In other matches: No. 1 boys singles player Drew Meester lost to Liam Coley 1-6, 4-6; Josie Bohn lost to Sophia Rodriguez 0-6, 3-6 at No. 1 girls singles; No. 2 girls singles Tatum Sonke lost to Bella Rodriguez; and No. 2 boys doubles Emmit Van Laar/Braden Schaapman lost to Richard Boyk/Jonthan Smith, 0-6, 2-6.

Bear River next plays No. 1-seeded Argonaut.
