Two men couldn’t wait for the Starbucks at Airport Way and the 120 Bypass to open early Wednesday morning.

They were anxious to hit the road but with cash and not coffee.

Manteca Police say a man wearing a mask started pounding on the locked glass front doors at 3:46 a.m. to the coffee shop in the Stadium Retail Center demanding that employees open it.

The work crew fled to the back of the building for safety while calling police. The suspect then ran to the drive-through window and started banging on it while yelling at the staff.

Manteca Police spokesperson Sgt. Jodie Estarziau said officers responded with multiple units to the coffee shop just as an Acura sedan raced out of the parking lot at a high rate of speed.  Officers pursued the vehicle onto westbound Highway 120 and initiated a high risk traffic stop where they ordered the two occupants out of the vehicle at gunpoint.

Estarziau said a search of the vehicle found two semi-automatic hand guns, a mask, gloves and a jacket consistent with the clothing description given of the suspect at the door of the coffee shop.

Turlock residents Edin Martinez, 19, and Mark A. Padilla, 21, were arrested and booked for attempted robbery, conspiracy and firearms violations.  They were both transported to San Joaquin County Jail in French Camp. They will appear in court Friday at 1:25 p.m.

Martinez is being held in lieu of $350,000 bail and Padilla has a bail of $263,000.
