RIPON — Copper thieves are now hitting street lights.

Some 600 feet of copper wire to street lights were ripped out overnight on Sunday.

Ripon Police First Sergeant Steve Merchant said that number four and number six wire were taken from the poles on River Road, Fulton Avenue and Doak Boulevard.

Merchant said the base of the street lights were pried open. The hot wires were then shorted out before it was pulled from the ground and the poles.
