All of the pieces of the famous television show were in place Tuesday night when The Commons at Union Ranch celebrated their one-year anniversary with the program dancing with the Manteca stars – pairing local high-profile faces with dance instructors for a night of fun.
With a silent auction that benefitted the local Alzheimer’s Association, the fundraising event – which was heavily attended by not only residents of The Commons but people in the community as well – added another dimension to the celebration by raising awareness for patients with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
“What we accomplished today was not just providing the residents here at this facility with entertainment, but bringing people together that can benefit organizations like the Alzheimer’s Association,” said Manteca Vice Mayor Steve DeBrum – one of the “stars” that got a turn on the floor. “It was a fun event, and it was good to be able to be a part of something like this that will benefit people here and in our area.”
And while the performances that were turned in Tuesday night included high-flying gymnastics and unique interpretations, it was Doctors Hospital of Manteca CEO Mark Lisa that took a page out of American Idol Judge Simon Cowell’s book by issuing his own one-line disses of the performances – made in jest and backed up each time with supporting words.
“They say that in dancing and in comedy, timing is everything,” Lisa said when evaluating the performance of DeBrum and his partner Kayla Robert. “Unfortunately, you had nothing in that department.”
His evaluation of former Police Chief and current Boys and Girls Club Executive Director Charlie Halford’s turn with Raiderette partner Jonni Rogers wasn’t much better.
“Charlie – people told you to go out there and break a leg. Unfortunately, you didn’t,” Lisa joked.
But the Doctors Hospital head also managed to draw the wrath of the crowd when he gave the combo of Firefighter/Engineer Sterrie McLeod and his partner Stephanie Rebeiro – who turned out one of the most unique performances with a tap dancing country blend of “Cotton Eyed Joe” and “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.”
The three that both of them received from Lisa out of four points drew sharp boos from supporters.
In the end, it was head dance instructor Harmony Flores – who teamed up with the President and CEO of Premier Care Don Petersen – that put together a salsa-themed jaunt that earned unanimous top marks from all three judges.
