Drive short 1,598 turkeys for struggling families in South County

Turkeys R Us is just under the one-third mark to making sure no struggling family in Manteca, Ripon or Lathrop goes without a Thanksgiving meal.

Additional donations of $1,125 were collected Monday and Tuesday bringing the number of turkeys that can be bought to 302. The overall goal is to provide both a Thanksgiving and Christmas meal for 950 families. That means 1,598 turkeys are still needed to cover the goal of 1,900 turkeys. The turkeys cost $12 apiece to purchase.

The most pressing demand is for Thanksgiving. Although it is 22 days away, the turkeys must be purchased and delivered to 12 food closets serving the three communities by the weekend prior.

A typical household receiving the turkey meals often have at least one person working. They are on the ropes financially either due to reduced hours, medical expenses, or have lost their jobs. A good number are on limited income either as seniors without adequate financial, resources and single mothers.

Several groups have stepped up to conduct turkey drives for the effort.
