A 2007 GMC truck driven by James Douglas, 56, of Manteca rammed into the south wing of the Manteca Optometric Eye Care Center on Fremont Avenue around 11 o’clock Wednesday night.
The force took out the front and side walls of the building, and broke a water pipe inside. The front of the four-door pickup stopped short of hitting the wall on the other side of the room.
“He’s drunk!” said Annette, the driver’s wife, who arrived at the scene almost at the same time as the firefighters and police officers who responded to the emergency.
Annette Douglas said she had been to the 133 Club about half an hour before the accident to give her husband a ride home because she knew he was too drunk to drive. But he turned down her offer, she said. When she got home at Curran Grove near the Powers Avenue fire station and saw the fire trucks’ emergency lights, she said she knew her husband has gotten into trouble.
“I’m just glad he’s alive,” she said, which she added was a slim comfort considering she lost her first husband to a car accident.
That accident did not involving drunken driving.
She said she and her husband, who is retired from the same company where she is still working in the Bay Area, have been married for three years.
After being interviewed by Manteca Police, James Douglas was handcuffed and taken away from the scene by police officers.
A woman who leaves across the street from the optometric clinic said this is the second time in about a month that a car drove straight into the building. The first vehicle did not cause any extensive damage to the building. The driver drove away before the police arrived, she said.
