Farm Day at Shasta School started off some 10 years ago on a much smaller scale.
The annual event has grown ever since, offering an array of presenters from the agriculture community.
“The key to our success has been organization,” said coordinator Debbie Wilson.
She and Rosemarie Craighead also credited Principal Rick Mello, who recently passed away. “He gave us his support and free reign,” Wilson said on Friday.
The new Farm Day attractions included Tracy Witmer with the Dairy Council, Joe Ferreira from the Department of Fish and Game, Manteca Branch Library favorite Python Ron, and Troylene Sayler of the South San Joaquin Irrigation District.
According to organizers, George Cabral and his chuck wagon reminiscent of the old west is a Farm Day staple.
“George has been with us since the beginning,” Wilson said.
At Shasta, Farm Day is an all-day event involving each of the kindergarten-through-eighth-grade students.
Among the other attractions were the ag aircraft presented by Terry Gage; Barbies bunnies; bats; bees by Ellen and Jerry Johnson; bread making made possible by Amanda Sephos; butter by OnaLee Koster; California Critters; corsages (Kristy White); the Cowboy Museum (Christie Camarillo); Dairy Princess Katherine Nissen; fruit, vegetables and nutrition; farm safety; forestry; Indian life as told by Linda Voorheis; Migrant Children of the Corn (Luis Magana); olive oil (Nancy Bozzano); A&A Rossi Hay Services of Manteca; seed balls; Stanislaus wildlife; Vegetable Story (Erin Tassey, Save Mart); and ponies featuring two Shetland ponies and a dwarf horse (Suzan Cunningham).
