For the first time in seven years, a job recruitment fair for K-12 substitute teachers is being held by the San Joaquin County Office of Education. The event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 23. Its purpose is to create an open pool of qualified substitute teachers who will be called upon to step in when a regular teacher is out sick or can’t make it to work due to other emergencies.

The substitutes will be called upon to report for work on a temporary basis at local schools, both traditional as well as charter, throughout San Joaquin County. Manteca Unified, which is just one of the school districts that will be using the substitute teacher pool, will have representatives helping at the recruitment fair.

The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the county Office of Education’s Wentworth Education Center at 2707 Transworld Drive off Arch Road near the Metro Airport in Stockton. Cost is free.

Interested applicants are asked to bring their resume and their transcripts showing where you have earned a bachelor’s degree. To be qualified as a substitute teacher, one has to have a bachelor’s degree and must have taken the CBEST test.

Substitute teaching pays about $110 to $150 a day, so it’s a “nice way for folks” to have supplemental income, said Shawn Chavez, SJCOE public information officer. Some of them are retired teachers, she added.

There is currently a shortage of teachers which makes it necessary to seek out qualified substitutes to step in when a teacher is sick or cannot come to work for other emergency reasons, explained Karen DePrater, San Joaquin County Office of Education (SJCOE) Human Resources director.

The recruitment fair is an opportunity for anybody to explore not only job opportunities but possibilities about whether they are interested in a teaching career, Chavez said.

A similar recruitment fair, this time for teachers, will be held in March, DePrater said.
