Manteca High School is gearing for the annual special Valentine’s Day dance for special students in the Manteca Unified School District area as well as other places in San Joaquin County.

For more than a decade, Manteca High has hosted this event for all handicapped students complete with food, prizes given away and the crowning of the King and Queen of the day to reign over the festivities.

In the past, the dance was held in the school cafeteria. This time, it will be held in the small gym from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 14. Student guests will be dancing to music provided by a disc jockey.

“We have invited all severely handicapped programs in town and the county to participate in the event,” said Manteca High’s media liaison Nina Horton.

“In the past, this has been a big event. The students dress up in formal wear, and I can’t remember ever seeing bigger smiles on faces,” she added.

School staff, students and parents have made this annual Valentine’s Day dance successful for the students. One year, several Manteca High students adopted this event as their senior project. They helped secure some of the prizes given away to the students. They also ordered corsages, sashes and crowns for the selected Valentine’s Day King and Queen.
