VOLLEYBALL: Lathrop advances to semis after sweeping Twelve Bridges

 Lathrop is the last boys volleyball team in the area still standing after sweeping past visiting sixth seed Twelve Bridges 25-22, 25-19, 25-21 in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III quarterfinals on Tuesday.

The third-seeded Spartans (25-5) travel to No. 2 Vanden (24-11) on Thursday.

Gabriel Fa’ali’i accumulated 21 kills, nine digs and four aces for Lathrop. Peter Respicio contributed with 11 kills and a block. Marco Palomares added seven kills and 10 digs.

Alexander Vere compiled 44 assists, and Charles Reyes had 24 digs. Cameron Loyola (two aces, block) and Mark Llorin pitched in four kills apiece to the attack.


Vanden 3, Ripon Christian 1

The No. 7 Knights (19-8) had their season end in Fairfield, 25-21, 18-25, 14-25, 22-25.

Christian Ting helped turn the tide for second-seeded Vanden (24-11) after Ripon Christian took the opening set and led 14-8 in the second. Ting served 10 straight points, and the Vikings rolled from there.

Setter Preston Zuidervaart netted 19 assists, two blocks and two kills in his final match for Ripon Christian. He and fellow seniors Jacob Camper and Zach Varni were part of two SJS championship teams, one of which went on to win a NorCal title.

Sophomore outside hitters Mason Tameling and Danny Lambdin spearheaded the offense with 17 and 13 kills, respectively.

Darren Van Groningen, another sophomore, had five kills and five blocks. Joel Hendricks handed out 19 assists, and Isaiah Vander Woude contributed six kills and two blocks.


Oakmont 3, Sierra 0

The top-seeded Timberwolves (22-9) had their season end in a 17-25, 17-25, 21-25 sweep.

No. 9 Oakmont (14-13) takes on No. 4 Christian Brothers in the semifinals


Division IV

John Adams Academy 3, Ripon 2

No. 5 Ripon (22-10) dropped a 25-7, 26-28, 25-22, 22-25, 14-16 heart-breaker in Roseville.

John Adams Academy (22-9) squares off with top-seeded Futures on Thursday.
