WESTON RANCH — High school can be a place of unlimited possibilities.
Just ask George Zhang. He’s the valedictorian at Weston Ranch High.
On Friday, Zhang will lead the Class of 2010 at the 7 p.m. commencement exercises at the WRHS stadium.
The UC Berkeley-bound Zhang – he’s leaning towards business as a possible major – was founder of Game Lounge, a video-game playing club consisting of 25 members.
He’s hoping that Game Lounge will be his legacy at Weston Ranch.
The son of Qiuping Xu and Xiaomin Zhang, George Zhang was captain of his Junior Reserve Training Officers Corps. He also served as an honor guard commander, and Drill and Raider teams.
Zhang earned the top academic honor based on his 4.25 grade point average.
Alejandro Barron, meanwhile, was aware that he was ranked among the top students. But it wasn’t until a few days ago during senior awards night that he was officially announced as one of two salutatorians.
“We had to wait because they had miscalculated on the tallying of the grades,” he said.
The announcement of sharing the salutatorian honor also came as a surprise to Jessica Barry.
“I was really, really surprised,” she said.
Jessica Barry is the daughter of Susan P. and Andrew Barry. She will attend California State University, Stanislaus in the fall, majoring in theater.
She was involved in theater during her years at Weston Ranch. Included was the school production of “Frankenstein.”
In addition, Barry was active in choir, the Literary Club and helped out as a tutor. Her volunteer work consisted of tutoring and working with the various service organizations.
Alejandro Barron is the son of Ramon and Claudia Barron.
He recently decided to attend UC Santa Barbara, with a possible major in economics or accounting.
“I might change it to business,” Barron said.
His activities at Weston Ranch included swimming, the Go Green Club, and president of the European Club.
Barron, who helped out as tutor to elementary school students, visited Italy as a freshman and France during this past year.
“I really want to go back to Italy,” he said.
As the top academic students, Barron, Barry and Zhang will be among the speakers at graduation.
“I’m focusing on the future and graduation,” Zhang said. “High school was a happy time and a place of unlimited possibilities.”
