Former bike shop may morph into Ripon dining spot

Another downtown restaurant could soon be coming to Ripon.
On Monday, the Planning Commission will review a request to convert a vacant building that was once a bike shop into the trendy “Level 40 Public House.”
Located at 201 S. Acacia Ave., this is the former home of George’s Bike Shop. More recently, American Legion Post 190 used it as office space.
According to Director of Planning Ken Zuidervaart, the parcel is already zoned (Central Business) for this type of use, with the current configuration of the building being about 1,960 square feet of open space within the existing structure.
“The applicant would like to improve the interior of the building by modifying the existing space and adding approximately 795 square feet to the building,” he said in his staff report. “Interior improvements would include bathrooms, kitchen, cooler and freezer, bar area and dining space.”
Zuidervaart added that the applicant is looking to utilize some of the outdoor space for dining. “This is allowable pursuant to the Ripon Municipal Code by acquiring an outdoor dining permit with the City,” he noted.
Commissioners will also look at plans for the exterior.
In this case, the applicant for Level 40 Public House is proposing First Street as the main entrance to the restaurant – featured would be a new glass door and a new reclaimed wood façade surrounding the entrance.
The exterior of the building would remain metal siding but with enhancements including new paint. The plan also indicated new glass roll-up doors to the side of the building to provide the flexibility for indoor / outdoor dining areas.
Those are just some of the features.
At the 6 p.m. meeting in the Council Chambers, 259 N. Wilma Ave, the Planning Commission will look at the vicinity map, existing site photos, existing site plan, proposed site plan, proposed floor plan, conceptual interior improvements & design, proposed exterior elevations, parking analysis (provided by the applicant) and the downtown district boundary map.
