Former SJ Sheriff Bob Heidelbach appointed by board in 2005 dies

STOCKTON — Funeral services for former Sheriff Robert “Bob” Heidelbach will be held at Morris Chapel, University of the Pacific, in Stockton this Friday.

Heidelbach served as Sheriff from 2005 to 2007 after his appointment by the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors. He began his law enforcement career in Tracy in 1964 as a dispatcher and was promoted to officer status in 1966 until joining the Sheriff’s Department two years later becoming a deputy.

His assignments included Custody, Patrol, Investigations, and the Personnel and Training divisions. In 1976 he was promoted to sergeant and worked in a variety of divisions and assignments until promoting to lieutenant in 1986. He was assigned to the Custody Division in Administration where he managed personnel & Training as well as the Records Division.

Heidelbach was promoted to Assistant Sheriff in 1990 with administrative responsibilities for the Custody Division as well as overseeing the planning, training and transition into a new Sheriff’s Operation Center and Custody Complex – being promoted to Undersheriff in 1996.

He retired in 1999 and was later brought out of retirement and tapped to fill the open Sheriff’s position following Baxter Dunn’s resignation. He and his wife Kathy had been married for 50 years.
