With the first day of instruction about a week away, the five comprehensive high schools of Manteca Unified are gearing up to welcome the newcomers.
Lathrop High is finally part of that group. The Spartans, who boast their first-ever senior class, will host a freshmen meeting on Wednesday, from 8 to 10 a.m.
East Union, Sierra and Manteca High will turn to Link Crew to handle freshmen orientation.
Link Crew is a leadership program offered at many high schools nationwide. The program allows each school to select upper-classmen to be linked with freshmen throughout the year.
The new school year starts on Monday, Aug. 16.
During freshmen orientation, Link Crew leaders – made up mostly of juniors and seniors – often pull out the stop to get ninth-grade students involved in the various ice-breaking activities.
At East Union, Link Crew leaders will meet with freshmen from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Dino Cunial Field.
The Link Crew event for ninth-grade students at Sierra High is scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon Thursday in the large gymnasium. Furthermore, the school is planning orientation for seniors (Thursday, 7:30 to 10 a.m.), juniors (Friday, 7:30 to 10 a.m.), sophomores (Friday, 10:30 a.m. to noon), and freshmen (Thursday, 10:30 a.m. to noon).
Manteca High’s freshmen orientation will be held Friday in Winter Gymnasium, from 8 a.m. to noon.
Meanwhile, Weston Ranch High will be conducting the Cougar Convention on Thursday, with the session for freshmen penciled in from 1 to 3 p.m. (seniors meet from 8 to 10 a.m., and juniors and sophomores from 10 to noon).
School officials will work to provide students with organizational skills. Those attending the Cougar Convention are encouraged to bring one three-inch binder with lined paper; six subject dividers, one for each class; and one zipper pouch with at least two pencils, two pens, an eraser and one highlighter.
