SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A 7-year-old boy in San Francisco had to be hospitalized after he was attacked by a swarm of hornets at Golden Gate Park.

City parks spokeswoman Sarah Ballard tells the San Francisco Chronicle (bit.ly/143RzH5) the boy was playing on a hill above a carousel near a playground when he accidentally disturbed the underground hornets’ nest Thursday afternoon.

City fire spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge says firefighters took the boy to University of California, San Francisco Medical Center. Talmadge says the boy did not appear to have an allergic reaction to the stings and his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Ballard says workers remove about five nests a week from the park this time of year, and though hornets and wasps are very active right now, such attacks are rare.
