Overturned tanker hauling ethanol fuel closes I-205

An afternoon commute snafu caused by an overturned tanker closed Interstate 205 in both directions for more than eight hours Tuesday near the Alameda County line.

The CHP said a truck hauling ethanol overturned at around 1:30 p.m. blocking all lanes of westbound I-205.

At that time, one lane of eastbound I-205 was also blocked. The westbound Interstate 580 was also closed.

I-205 ended up being closed in both directions due to the fire danger involved with unloading the ethanol fuel before the tanker could be up righted.

Traffic was diverted onto eastbound I-205. That sent commuters bound for Modesto down to Highway 132.

Commuters trying to reach Tracy, Manteca, Lathrop, Ripon, Stockton and points east clogged narrow rural south Tracy roads.

It created heavy traffic on Kasson Road heading north to reach Interstate 5, Airport Way to each the 120 Bypass and West Ripon Road to reach Highway 99.
