Safety volunteers sought for Manteca’s No Kings protest set for March 28

Organizers of the No Kings protest on Saturday, March 28 — that could be the largest protest ever staged in Manteca — are seeking volunteer to serve on a safety team.

The protest is taking place at the intersection of Spreckels and Yosemite in Manteca from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. that day.

Organizers are anticipating 2,000 people to assemble, nearly triple last year’s No Kings protest conducted at the same location.

“We need volunteers who don’t want to chant, sing, or wave signs,” said John Hawk, Safety Captain for the event from Manteca Indivisible. “We need safety team members who act as watchful, silent guardians who speak only to encourage others to use their best behavior.”

Hawk said “the greatest hazards are due to the nature of an outdoor event.”

Volunteers are needed to pull little red wagons to pass out water provided by the Democratic Club of Manteca and keep an eye out for those suffering from the heat.

They also will need to remind participants not to step into the street for that “perfect shot” with a smart phone.

Hawk noted counter protesters in previous Manteca protests have been minimal with only the occasional rude word or gesture.

To accommodate counter protestors, organizers are setting aside one of the four corners as a designated counter protest area and are encouraging them to exercise their first amendment rights from a distance.

“So far, we’ve found common ground with counter protesters in the desire to keep everyone safe,” Hawk said.

Attendees are encouraged to sign up at Mobilize.us using the “Nk3” filter to find the event, or go directly to https://www.mobilize.us/nokings/event/902095/

There are over 1,000 No Kings protests planned nationwide for March 28.
