Ripon had problem getting out of its own way in the first set with visiting Hilmar on Wednesday night with multiple unforced errors leading to five ties and four lead changed before eking out a 25-23 win before bouncing back to dominate the next two 25-7, 25-11 for a Trans-Valley League boys volleyball win.

“We have a few key players out,” Indians coach Tara Maruyama said. “Our 6-8 middle is out, along with an outside hitter, so we have other players kind of stepping in and learning their role and chemistry, trying to figure out where they are supposed to be playing and making sure they feel confident.”

“After that first set, they were a lot more confident. They started feeling good, and everyone was learning their roles and building up their confidence.”

Libero Hugo Garcia-Martinez racked up 25 digs and served the last five points of the second set for Ripon (2-0 TVL, 4-3 overall) with three of those points coming via ace.

“Usually, I am pretty consistent with my serves,” Garcia-Martinez said. “I always try and get them in rather than power them in. My last one in that run had top spin on it. I was trying to get creative, and luckily it went in.

“Covering the court is my main concern, and I try to be all around the court.”

Sebastian Ceja and Armando Ayon tallied 10 kills apiece for the Indians.

“It was all due to my setter (Cade Fullmer),” Ceja said.

In addition to his 29 assists, Fullmer racked up eight aces, including an ace for match point, along with four kills.

“My serves have never really been consistent since the beginning of the season,” Fullmer said. “But recently I got them dialed in.

“It’s amazing to set to some of these guys. It’s good to play with a team I have chemistry with.”

The Yellowjackets drop to 0-2, 1-5.

Ripon’s Armaan Gill tallied 14 service points with seven of those points to start off the third set.
