Sonic fast food restaurant up for site approval

Ripon has one. And so does Lathrop and Tracy.

Now, Manteca is getting its own Sonic Drive-in.

Site plans for the fast food endeavor that still has car service made popular in the 1950s are going before the Manteca Planning Commission when they meet Thursday, July 17, at 6 p.m.

It is going on a parcel immediately west of where a Chevron gas station with an Extra Mile convenience store and car wash is being pursued for the northwest corner of Daniels Street and Airport Way. That project’s site plans are before the commission for a possible one year extension on Thursday as they had been previously approved.

The 1,502-square-foot restaurant will have 22 parking stalls and a drive-thru lane that can handle 12 cars.

City staff surveyed existing Sonics in Manteca, Lathrop, and Tracy at various times to see whether that was adequate parking and a big enough queue for the drive-thru.

They determined it was adequate.

The Sonic will share a common driveway with the Chevron station that allows only right turns off of — and on to  — Daniels.

The Chevron station, convenience store and car wash will also have similar right only access to and from Airport Way.

Sonic will tentatively be open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week.

There is the option of ordering food at the drive-thru window, delivery of food to parked vehicles at one of the ordering stations, or to have employees bring the food to the outdoor seating area.

Outside orders can be initiated by kiosk in the outdoor seating area.

There is no indoor seating.

The one-year extension would accommodate a Chevron gas station with 10 fuel pumps, a 3,400 square foot Extra Mile Convenience store, a 2,300 square foot quick-service restaurant, and a drive thru car wash.

The quick serve restaurant will be accessible from the convenience store.

The 1.5 acre site will also include 39 parking spaces.

The endeavor will include a welcome to Manteca sign on the corner.
