A handful of performers took part in the talent show event held Thursday at the Thomas Toy Community Center.

Included were the musical trio of Daniel Cortes, Humberto Almaraz, and Anthony Garcia – they also performed at the inaugural Breakfast for Dinner fundraiser featuring plenty of who’s who in the area held in May.

It was warm-up, of sorts for the upcoming Tommy Awards being conducted by the center as part of a competition in November,

There are two divisions — seventh and eighth grades as well as high school.

The areas of competition are performance arts, music, dance, visual arts, and writing.

“We’ve been playing as a group for about a year,” said guitarist and lead singer Daniel Cortes, who is a sophomore at Manteca High.

He and fellow guitarist Almarez, who is a senior at MHS, have playing music for the past two years. Garcia, who is also a senior at MHS, has been playing the bass for about five years.

Together, they performed the Regional Mexican song “Del Negociante” by Los Plebes del Rancho de Ariel Camacho.

It was Garcia, a regular at the Thomas Toy Community Center, who got the trio together for the talent show.

According to Program Director Tim Kemptner, the event featuring local talent was held to get club members to practice being in front of a live audience while opening the door for them to take part in Tommys Award in November.

Those who didn’t make for this event can still submit their application along with a video clip to TTCC by Thursday, Oct. 23, by 6 p.m.

The Tommys will consist of two separate divisions – Junior High and High School – and feature talent categories in visual arts, performing arts, literary arts, media arts, and social impact.

Musical groups must not exceed more than five members and be part of TTCC. There is no membership fees for being a member.
