The Manteca Fire Department sent out a strike team Thursday to help battle a fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains – the Lockheed Incident near the town of Bonny Doon.

The fire crew is under the direction of Captain Franco Torrice with engineer Jeff Barr and firefighters Brian Swift and Traig Smith manning the engine.

They are part of 1,500 firefighters expected to be on the fire lines by dawn this morning.

Interim Manteca Fire Chief Kirk Waters said the mutual aid request included one chief officer to respond as a strike team leader.

“I had to deny (that) request based on our needs this week in the city of Manteca.  Our city is always the priority,” Waters said
