Manteca High stages first signing event for academic awards

This was a long time in the planning.
Manteca High’s College Prep Club is honoring those with academic scholarships on Tuesday, April 25, with a Senior Signing Day event.
According to advisor Nina Norton, this inaugural event will be similar in some ways to Letter of Intent signings for student athletes.
The Senior Signing Day, however, is actually based on the national program inspired by former First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Reaching Higher” program.
The event is scheduled from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Dawson Center.
“We will be celebrating the success of MHS seniors who will be attending four-year college or university next fall,” she said.
Assistant Principal Troy Fast is scheduled to give a short speech followed by students and their families being treated to a social hour consisting of a celebratory cake, a photo-op of “signing” – in this case, it will be the senior doing a simulation inking of his or her college acceptance letter – and music and fellowship involving future college students and their families.
“In addition to celebrating our seniors, (we) will also encourage undergraduates to stop by and look at the opportunities available on continuing their education,” Norton said.
