Newcomer takes out papers in race for Manteca council

A fresh face could appear on the Nov. 6 Manteca City Council ballot.

Sheila Raya is among those currently circulating nomination papers for one of two council seats up for grabs in the general election.

The Joshua Cowell School neighborhood resident needs 20 valid signatures of registered voters within the city limits by Aug., 10 to qualify for the ballot.

Incumbent Steve DeBrum has already returned his candidacy papers complete with signatures. The 10-year council veteran is seeking his third four-year term.

Also circulating nomination papers are incumbent Debby Moorhead and Ben Cantu.

Moorhead is seeking her second four-year -term. Cantu finished third in the race for two Manteca City Council seats in the 2008 election behind DeBrum and Moorhead. He finished second in the race for mayor in 2010 losing to Willie Weatherford while coming in ahead of Moorhead.

Nomination papers are available from the City Clerk’s office.
