Portable restrooms in works for BMX park

Two permanent “portable” restrooms are scheduled to be put in place next week at the new BMX track at Spreckels Recreation Park.

They will be similar to ones now in place at Morezone Field on Center Street west of Union Road. They are akin to port-a-potties but are permanent. They do not have running water.

Permanent restroom facilities - even the modular type that were put in place at Library Park - were rejected as too costly.

The Library Park restrooms bought as a unit five years ago cost $125,000. The city opted to go that route as it slashed the cost by as much as 60 percent.

The Spreckels Recreation Park location is even more problematic due to the distance from the nearest sewer main plus the fact it is in a bowl.

The delay in getting the restrooms in place had to do partially with the weather that slowed down progress on getting a concrete pad poured and an enclosure in place. That work has just recently been completed.
